Best AR Glasses for Working on a Laptop as a Virtual Monitor (2026)

10 min readBy The Near Eye Editorial
Last updated:Published:

Five display glasses ranked for laptop work from XREAL's and Viture's own spec pages: the XREAL One Pro leads, the Viture Luma Ultra wins multi-screen 6DoF, and the XREAL 1S is the budget X1 pick.

What are the best AR glasses for working on a laptop as a virtual monitor?

The XREAL One Pro is the best pair for laptop work: its X1 chip anchors the screen without software, its 57° field of view trails only the Viture Beast, and its Ultrawide Mode turns a USB-C laptop into a curved 310-inch desktop, at $549.00 against a $649.00 list price at XREAL's US shop (checked October 2026). Pick the Viture Luma Ultra ($469, listed from $599) for a 6DoF multi-screen workspace on Mac or Windows, or the XREAL 1S ($399.00) for the X1 chip at the lowest price.

Everything below is drawn from XREAL's and Viture's product pages and user guide and from Tom's Guide's published roundup rather than first-hand use.

What makes display glasses usable as a monitor

Four properties decide whether a spreadsheet or a code editor stays readable for a work session, and none of them is the advertised screen size, which every maker inflates with a simulated viewing distance.

Head tracking. Without it the picture rides along with your head and text swims. 3DoF tracking pins the screen in one direction; 6DoF also holds it in place as you lean in or shift in your seat. XREAL's One series does 3DoF on the glasses' own X1 chip, so a bare laptop connection is enough. Viture's Luma glasses add tracking through the free SpaceWalker app, and the Luma Ultra's cameras extend that to 6DoF on macOS and Windows, which Viture describes as "closer to using a physical monitor".

Field of view. This is the real screen size. The pairs below span 50° to 58°; a wider field lets you run a larger virtual display without turning your head to read the edges.

Brightness and shading. The panels here run from 600 to 1500 nits, and both makers fit electrochromic lenses that darken the real world behind the screen. In a bright office you want both the nits and the shading.

Fit and vision. IPD range and prescription support decide whether text is sharp at all. XREAL sells the One Pro in two IPD sizes and offers prescription lens inserts for each model; Viture builds diopter dials into most Luma models (to -4.0D) but not into the Beast.

Two constraints apply to every pick. The laptop needs a USB-C port with DisplayPort video output; XREAL's guide puts it as "Devices with a Type-C port that supports DP video output can be directly connected to the glasses, which will draw power from the device." And Viture's spec sheets list a suggested wearing time of 3~4 hrs per session, which is a realistic ceiling for any of these.

The picks

1. XREAL One Pro: best overall for laptop work

XREAL's US shop lists the One Pro at $549.00 with a $649.00 regular price (checked October 2026). Its spec column reads: X1 chip, X Prism optics, 57°, Sony 0.55-inch micro-OLED, 1080p at 120 Hz, 700 nits, three electrochromic dimming modes, Sound by Bose and 87 g, in two IPD sizes (M for 57-66 mm, L for 66-75 mm). The modes that matter for work are native to the glasses: the shop page promises "Unlock your own native 3 DoF spatial screen powered by XREAL One Pro when connected to devices with USB-C", "the all new Ultrawide Mode, a curved virtual screen that reaches 310 inches", and "Side View, a mini screen for multitaskers". Tom's Guide's roundup sums it up: "Quality-wise, the Xreal One Pro is one of the best AR glasses you can buy, but to buy them, you've got to pay a high price." Our XREAL One vs XREAL One Pro comparison covers what the cheaper One gives up. See current listings on eBay.

2. Viture Luma Ultra: best multi-screen workspace on Mac or Windows

Viture's product page lists the Luma Ultra at $469 against a $599 regular price during its autumn sale (checked October 2026). The display is a 152-inch, 52° FOV, 1200p panel at 1500 nits, with built-in myopia adjustment "up to -4.0D" and, uniquely in Viture's range, "a front-facing RGB camera and dual grayscale depth cameras". Those cameras are the work feature: "with 6DoF running through SpaceWalker on macOS or Windows, the virtual screen stays fixed in space, closer to using a physical monitor", and SpaceWalker "adds multi-screen support". Viture notes the glasses connect "via its included USB-C to Magnetic Connector cable" and work with "USB-C devices running Windows or macOS"; there is no battery, so the laptop powers them. See current listings on eBay.

3. Viture Luma Pro: the same panel with 3DoF for less

At $359 against a $499 regular price (checked October 2026), the Luma Pro keeps the Luma Ultra's display. Viture describes "a 152" virtual display (52° FOV, at a simulated 4-meter viewing distance) on a 1200p Micro-OLED panel at up to 120Hz and 1000 nits peak brightness". You lose the cameras, so tracking is "3DoF head tracking" through SpaceWalker, which also brings "multi-screen support for a bigger workspace". It comes in two sizes, "Regular (for IPDs up to 70mm) and Large (for IPDs up to 74mm)", with the same -4.0D diopter range. For a laptop that sits on a desk, 3DoF is enough.

4. XREAL 1S: the budget X1 pick

XREAL's US shop lists the 1S at $399.00 with a $449.00 regular price (checked October 2026). XREAL's spec strip gives it a "Sony Micro OLED HD display", "120Hz High Refresh Rate", "1200P HD Resolution", "700nits Peak Brightness", the "XREAL X1" chip, "3ms M2P Latency" and "Stable 3DoF", with Sound by Bose. Tom's Guide's roundup likes exactly that combination: "At $449, you're getting a 500-inch display running at 1200p, and that X1 chip goodness, which means all the display trickery (including a 32:9 panel) is all on-device rather than through software." XREAL does not print a field-of-view figure on the 1S pages we read, so treat it as the smaller-screen sibling of the One Pro. Prescription lenses for the One and 1S run $49.90 to $149.90 at XREAL's shop. See current listings on eBay.

5. Viture Beast: the biggest screen, but no diopter dials

The Beast is Viture's flagship for immersion rather than text: "a 174-inch virtual display, 58° field of view, and Sony Micro-OLED panels up to 1,250 nits", with "native 3DoF" on the glasses themselves. Tom's Guide made it its top AR pick and praises the option of "a 32:9 ultrawide virtual monitor". Viture lists it at $529 against $549 (checked October 2026). The catch for workers who wear glasses: the spec sheet's myopia adjustment reads N/A, so you need Viture's prescription frame.

Also on the shelf

XREAL still lists the XREAL One at $349.00 (50°, 600 nits, 82 g in its comparison table), and Viture sells the Pro 2 at $299, which Tom's Guide calls "the most wallet-friendly way to get a solid virtual display for gaming or watching shows on the go". Tom's Guide also rates the RayNeo Air 4 Pro at $299 as "the pick for anyone who prioritizes a great screen and all-day comfort over cutting-edge extras". All three work as laptop screens but give up field of view or tracking hardware, so they are context here rather than picks.

Setting up the glasses as a laptop monitor

Check the port first. XREAL's instruction is blunt: "Ensure that your device's port supports DP video output via Type-C." Most recent MacBooks and USB-C Windows laptops qualify; for a machine with only HDMI, XREAL says "For PC , an HDMI adapter and an HDMI to USB cable are required."

Extend, do not mirror. XREAL's guide notes "Ultra-Wide Mode is only available on select devices" and tells you to "disable screen mirroring in your computer's display settings" to get an extended ultrawide desktop instead of a stretched copy of the laptop screen. It also warns that "The system does not retain the Ultra-Wide Mode setting until the next reconnection", so expect to toggle it each time you plug in. In Anchor mode, XREAL recommends setting "the screen slightly smaller than the FOV edge" so nothing is cut off.

Power. The glasses draw from the laptop. XREAL's advice: "To avoid battery anxiety, you can use the XREAL Hub for simultaneous charging and usage." The Hub is listed at $39.99 at XREAL's shop; Viture sells docks for the same job. Hubs, docks and cables turn up second-hand too: See current listings on eBay.

Vision. XREAL's One Pro prescription lenses run $59.90 to $159.90 and the One/1S lenses $49.90 to $149.90. Viture's Luma Pro and Ultra adjust to -4.0D on the glasses; the base Luma reaches -6.0D; the Beast has no adjustment. Our guide to prescription lenses for smart glasses explains inserts versus built-in dials, and inserts are a common secondary-market item: See current listings on eBay.

Sessions. Viture's spec sheets suggest 3~4 hrs of wear. Treat these as a travel and second-screen tool, not a replacement for a desk monitor across a full day. For the entertainment side of the same hardware, see XREAL vs Viture for watching and gaming and our guide to display glasses for watching TV in bed, which explains anchor and follow modes in plain terms.

FAQ

Can AR glasses replace a laptop monitor for a full workday?

Not on the makers' own guidance. Viture's spec sheets suggest 3~4 hrs of wear per session, and no pair here has a battery, so you are also drawing down the laptop. They replace a second monitor on a train, a plane or in a hotel; they do not replace a full-size desk display for eight hours.

Do I need software to use them with a MacBook or Windows laptop?

Not for the XREAL One Pro or 1S: the X1 chip handles 3DoF anchoring, Ultra-Wide Mode and Side View on the glasses. Viture's Luma glasses need the free SpaceWalker app for multi-screen layouts and for 3DoF or 6DoF tracking.

Which is sharper for text, the 1080p XREAL One Pro or the 1200p Viture Luma?

The Luma Ultra, Luma Pro, Beast and XREAL 1S all use 1200p panels; the One Pro is 1080p but spreads it across a wider 57° field. Neither maker publishes pixels per degree, so weigh resolution and field of view together, and note that Tom's Guide still rates the One Pro's picture among the best available.

Will these work with a laptop that only has HDMI?

Yes, with an adapter chain. XREAL's guide states that for a PC "an HDMI adapter and an HDMI to USB cable are required." Native USB-C DisplayPort is simpler and powers the glasses at the same time.

Are the glasses powered by the laptop?

Yes. XREAL's guide says a compatible device "will draw power from the device", and Viture says of the Luma Ultra "There's no built-in battery, so it draws power directly from the connected device." Budget for the laptop battery accordingly or use a hub with pass-through charging.
